Why Adult Short Stories Deserve More Attention

Society assumes children read short fiction, while adults should graduate to massive, heavy books. Because of this assumption, shorter adult-focused narratives are unfairly dismissed.

However, adult short stories deliver profound emotional weight into a few pages, and honestly, why not? Brevity isn’t just for the children.

The Illusion of Length and Depth

The Causes and Impact of the Shift in Demand for Short Novels

Many book lovers equate page count with literary importance. However, upon closer look, we see that longer novels are often padded with unnecessary filler.

In contrast, short story writers have to distil the narrative to its purest essence. Short stories are like a small knife taken to the battle front, so they must be very sharp.

The Architecture of the Short Story

This brevity in short stories intensifies the need for precision. As a result, several specific storytelling elements come into play:

  • The Hook: The opening line must seize the reader’s attention instantly and establish the rules of the imaginary world. Drop the reader directly into a moment of action, conflict, or profound atmosphere.
  • Vocabulary: Choose precise nouns and verbs rather than relying on weak adjectives or adverbs to do the heavy lifting.
  • Pacing: Control the rhythm of the prose. Keep the tempo tight so the narrative never drags or loses focus.
  • The Resonance of Subtext: Short stories thrive on what remains unsaid. Trust your reader to connect the dots. By hinting at a character’s backstory or world through subtle actions and dialogue, you create a richer, more engaging experience.
  • The Potent Climax: Every element of your narrative should funnel naturally towards the climax. Here, tension must peak to deliver a sharp, emotional blow. This is the culmination of your story’s momentum, leaving a lingering impact long after the final full stop.

The Importance of Adult Short Stories

  1. They are convenient and easy to read.
  2. In a rapidly moving world, shorter works acknowledge and respect readers’ limited schedules.
  3. Adult short stories hold great importance because they demand active participation from the reader instead of passive consumption.
  4. Because adult short stories require razor-sharp focus, they actively challenge the reader’s attention and concentration.
  5. They provide a structural outline that prompts the reader to engage their imagination and complete the experience, fostering a unique bond between writer and audience.

Adult Short Stories/Short Story collections to Read

Books to read during lockdown
  • The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explores profound themes of displacement and identity.
  • The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1892) is a haunting, groundbreaking feminist critique of the 19th-century “rest cure” and female autonomy.
  • Exhalation by Ted Chiang is a sci-fi tale that delivers profound realisations in minimalist prose.
  • Tenth of December by George Saunders challenges conventional storytelling. The satirical tales in this collection expose the evils of modern capitalism.
  • Interpreter of Maladies, by Jhumpa Lahiri, won a Pulitzer Prize and examines the lives of Indian immigrants in America.
  • What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah blends magical realism with sharp social commentary.
  • In “The Collector of Treasures,” Bessie Head highlights the struggles of women in rural Botswana. The narratives expose the brutal realities of patriarchal oppression.
  • Girls at War by Chinua Achebe captures the devastation of conflict and portrays the human cost of political instability.
  • The Lottery by Shirley Jackson terrified generations with a singular tale. She portrays a quaint village as it performs a horrific annual ritual, and the shocking conclusion forces the audience to examine the dark nature of blind tradition.

Conclusion

Novels are, bless their hearts, phasing out. The market for people who want to read a four-book series with too many stakes is dwindling (unless you’re J.K. Rowling, Stephen King or any of the other GOAT’s).

Short stories, especially adult short stories, give the writer freedom to tell diverse narratives succinctly. Ultimately, both forms deserve equal respect and a place on our shelves.

That said, the goal for intending authors writing a series should be to make each book engaging enough to follow up on, or at the very least, to let each book stand on its own. Happy drafting!
