No account of human history is complete without a very sharp object: swords.
They existed before guns, and you can find different sword designs in almost every culture.
So, it is no shock that they bled into our movies, games, books, and even music. Swords are cool, versatile, easy to use, though hard to master.
Here are ten of the coolest swords in history and fantasy.
Historical swords aren’t just cool; they carry stories from thousands of years.
They create myths and serve as evidence of different cultures. Some speak of royalty and wealth, while others show how easily they can kill an opponent.
Also known as the Konda sword, the Ikakalaka is a traditional 19th-century sword from the Mongo people in northwestern the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Historically, it served as both a practical weapon in conflict and a prominent symbol of chiefs and elders.
Despite its appearance, the sword swings like an axe, while its unique crescent tip and outward hooks let warriors pull down an enemy’s shield or trap their limbs in close combat.
The Sword of Goujian is a 2,500-year-old bronze straight sword (jian) from China’s Spring and Autumn period, famous for its sharp edge, black diamond patterns, and remarkable rust resistance.

Unearthed in 1965, the sword was still very sharp when archaeologists dug it up from Wangshan Tomb No. 1 in Hubei, China, thanks to its bronze construction and almost airtight scabbard.
The Shotel is a curved sword native to Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. Its extreme curve lets warriors reach around or over an enemy’s shield to strike vital organs, or hook and dismount horseback riders in cavalry combat.

Its history stretches back to the ancient Kingdom of Dʿmt, where people used it through the medieval era and the 1896 Battle of Adwa, before it became a cultural status symbol and ceremonial object.
The Zweihänder (German for “two-hander”) is a massive two-handed Renaissance greatsword that soldiers primarily wielded during the 16th century.

Wielded by specialized, double-pay German Landsknecht mercenaries, it swept and beat aside enemy pike formations (a dense, close-order military formation of foot soldiers armed with long thrusting spears called pikes), created breaches in lines, protected standard bearers, and controlled space against multiple opponents.
Swords in fantasy settings act differently. They defy human imagination and go beyond ordinary weapons of war, sparking interesting conversations because of their power. Swords in fantasy could be magical or not.
Magical swords are usually very powerful and are some of the coolest swords. This is because, instead of just cutting through a person, they offer more ways to help their wielder win. Some of them are:
The PowerStar is a broadsword that consists of two swords, the Power Sword and the Star Sword, from the 1981 Filmation animated series Blackstar.

This phenomenal sword can manipulate energy, grant its user superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, agility, and near-invulnerability to extreme temperatures.
When its two halves merge, it becomes a limitless power source and produces space-altering energy.
From Steven Erikson’s epic Malazan Book of the Fallen series, Dragnipur is a terrifyingly cool, two-handed sword with an inky-black blade that absorbs light.

What makes it so amazing is that it isn’t just a weapon; it is a pocket dimension that houses the actual Gate of Darkness inside a giant wooden wagon.
The souls of everyone the blade slays remain chained to the wagon for eternity, forced to pull it in an endless march to keep the encroaching forces of Chaos away.
Stormbringer is a massive, sentient sword created by author Michael Moorcock for his Elric of Melniboné saga.

It can cut through virtually any substance, threaten gods, and has a twin sword called Mournblade.
Non-magical swords have always been as cool as magical swords. Their design and construction materials make them powerful in their own way.
The Dragonslayer is the sword Guts, the Black Swordsman, wields in Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga Berserk.

It is less a refined sword and more a door-sized chunk of metal no normal human could lift, let alone swing.
Despite its crude appearance, it can kill not just physical armies but also beings and entities from other planes because it constantly absorbs the malice and blood of everything Guts slays.
Oathkeeper is a slim Valyrian steel longsword from A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones).

It has a striking visual design, featuring rippling dark-and-red waves in the metal and a gilded crossguard.
The sword embodies knightly duty, redemption, and tragic irony in a corrupt world. Violence and loss shaped its creation.
The Father of Swords is a massive, legendary two-handed greatsword from Joe Abercrombie’s dark fantasy series The First Law.

It is impossibly large, heavy, and thick, glowing with a mythic aura, decorated with a single silver letter near the hilt, and carries a hundred grim names in northern folklore, including “Dawn Raiser,” “Grave Maker,” and “Blood Harvest.”
These ten blades reveal the power of human imagination and how swords have always been part of us. Across history and fantasy fiction, they have represented everything from power, honour, and justice to revenge, corruption, and the burden of responsibility.
Sometimes, a sword becomes so closely associated with its wielder that the two are almost inseparable. Other times, the blade takes on a life of its own, becoming a symbol of an entire world, a forgotten age, or a struggle greater than any one character.
And perhaps that’s what makes these weapons so enduring. A sword can be a simple piece of sharpened metal, but in the right hands, it becomes something far more significant.
As long as history continues to inspire us, fictional heroes and villains rise to challenge one another, and storytellers imagine impossible odds, new swords will continue to emerge, each with its own legend waiting to be told.
