Whether you’re always reading fantasy books or you can’t resist finding a comfortable corner to continue immersing yourself in a romantic novel, reading is a wonderful thing to do. However, with technology seemingly taking over, there is an argument that not enough people are reading these days, especially given the rise of enthralling entertainment options like gaming.

With dramatically enhanced gaming experiences now on offer through sophisticated smartphones and highly powerful PlayStation 5 consoles, gaming communities have never had it so good. Likewise, there are now McLuck’s live casino games to tackle, sandbox favorites like Minecraft, and soccer lovers struggle to ignore titles like EA Sports FC 26. Still, despite the technology-based innovation that continues to occur, reading an alluring tale or an engrossing novel still piques the interest of many.

Sure, shorter attention spans and competition from social media platforms have played a part in reading’s decline, but there are still millions of people who would rather read a good book instead of attempting to reign supreme in battle royale clashes in Fortnite. Here’s why below.

Gaming can be daunting

With over 3 billion gamers on the planet, it’s a highly competitive offering for casual players to sample. There are enticing puzzle products and comical releases to session, but they’re on offer alongside a whole host of ruthless gaming products where players can be killed in seconds. For casual players who don’t want to spend hours mastering levels and receiving abusive messages following damaging defeats, gaming’s daunting package can therefore put them off, especially when they can enjoy a more relaxed experience while reading a book from the comfort of their own sofa.

Let your imagination run wild

In gaming, games developers generally shape the creative choices gamers are tasked with making. As such, games can become dull and imaginations can be stifled. However, in terms of books, reading is a more collaborative effort, with respected authors painting fascinating pictures and readers immersing themselves in these tales while expanding their imaginations in the process. With many video games also serving up similar products to the competition, creative minds can hit walls. Conversely, with readers being able to visualize scenes they’re reading about, soaking up a fantastic read never disappoints.

Books help people understand the world and its people

While many video games take place in magical open-worlds and planets filled with nasties, it’s fair to say they aren’t always relatable. Sure, there are numerous book genres that serve up similar packages, but they aren’t as prevalent. On the whole, many books focus on real-life issues, they take place in real-world locations, and they have the ability to heighten a reader’s empathy as they dive into the complexities of human nature. Where games don’t necessarily mirror real life, books tend to.

Books are educational

Alongside enabling people to understand the world and the psychology of people, books are also educational in other areas. For example, books improve language and communication skills; they enable readers to learn about foreign lands and historical insights, and they encourage critical thinking and more. However, the content involved in many gaming products isn’t really applicable to real life.

A more relaxing option

Gaming can also be an overstimulating experience. With jump scares taking place and defeats resulting in angry online players, it can cause people to feel stressed, frustrated, and angry. On the other hand, reading a book is a relaxing activity people have enjoyed for centuries, with book lovers everywhere tucking into their favorite author’s latest installment while having a lower heart rate and unwinding in the best way possible.
