The Last Fang of God

2025 has been a rather slow reading year for me, due to life’s many cares. But that’s a given. Nothing will ever stop me from reading altogether!

Ryan Kirk’s The Last Fang of God is only my second read this year, and my first ever fantasy standalone. Now, I typically don’t read standalone. My logic is this: If the story is so good, why does it have to end so soon? I mean, if you can keep the story going without fluff, please, by all means, go on!

So, yeah, I love big, chonky series. But I digress. Let’s get into the review.

Synopsis

In Ryan Kirk’s The Last Fang of God, a retired warrior is forcefully pulled back into the violent world he left many years prior to protect his loved ones.

Now, with the life of his very daughter in danger, he has to journey into those lands once more, facing old friends and foes in a quest to save her life.

Thoughts

The Last Fang of God is a short but fast-paced feisty read with great lessons on the whys of life, living, and everything it entails.

The writing is far from spectacular, but its engrossing enough to be enjoyable without ever truly igniting. The magic is quite interesting though, not overly explicit, but still well done.

Sascha made a very strong case for being one of the most annoying characters I’ve ever come across in fantasy, rivaling even Nynaeve of the Wheel of Time series. But, I suppose that’s part of what makes her a realistic and well-written character.

Verdict

The Last Fang of God is a dark fantasy read that’s still light enough to be recommended to fantasy newbies or readers looking for a break from the heavier themes and chonky reads.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
